5 Must Visit Beaches in Spain

Rise Up Tours & Travel has put together this article pinpointing our favourite must visit beaches.

1. La Concha Beach, San Sebastian

Not every extraordinary beach needs to be an isolated oasis. Take for instance, La Concha in the town of San Sebastian. Its setting is so breathtaking in part because it is flanked by a striking cityscape made even more dramatic by San Sebastian's hilly topography including the Santa Clara Island which is set in the middle of the bay. When you've had enough sun and sea, stumble off the beach and into some of San Sebastian's main sites, including the bustling promenade, which surrounds the beach, or visit the nearby town hall and old town historic center. There are some fantastic surfing hotspots further north towards the French border. There is a reason why this beach is number 1 on our must visit beaches in Spain!

2. Playa de Bolonia, Tarifa

Spain's Andalusian territory is home to some of Spain's most popular beaches, and most of them in Marbella and Malaga are packed to the rafters with tourists. It seems almost an impossible feat to find an untarnished stretch of sand in this part of the Iberian Peninsula. Yet travellers willing to trek to the fishing village of Bolonia in Tarifa will be rewarded with one of Spain's last unblemished beaches, Playa de Bolonia. If you trek a little further over the sand dunes you will come across some historical Roman ruins which were only discovered less than 40 years ago!

3. IllasCies, Island off Vigo

One of the notorious characteristics of Galicia is the abundance of lush vegetation and greenery surrounding the countryside and wild coastline due to the abundance of rainfall received in this part of Spain. Not many tourists give the majestic IllasCies a chance when they visit this region of Spain. Located some 7 miles off the shores of Vigo, visitors can find this gem of an island, home to an array of various sea life and birds. There is a reason why locals call this the “Galician Caribbean” due to its pristine white sand and sparkling clear water lagoon.

4. Playa de SesIlletes, Formentera (Balearic Islands)

The smallest island of the Balearic Islands. Tourists who want to get away from the madhouse of Ibiza only need to travel via a short ferry to reach one of Spain's most picturesque beaches. The blinding white sand flanked by turquoise seas has been a favourite amongst the younger crowd for generations due to its abundance of fancy restaurants and laid back bars, after dark the beach clears out and this quaint beachside town becomes vacant from the partygoers returning to enjoy the nightlife of Ibiza.

5. EsTrenc, Mallorca (Balearic Islands)

No surprise the Balearic Islands makes our top 5 picks twice. The famous EsTrenc is home to some of Spain's most striking natural landscapes. Visitors to EsTrenc will get confused for being on a Caribbean Beach as the water colour is certainly comparable! Nowadays EsTrenc is a popular destination for families due to the shallow water and lifeguards on duty throughout the year. Regular buses from the city centre of Mallorca make this a very easy commute. At certain times of the year, areas of this beach can be a heaven for windsurfing and kitesurfing due to the breeze coming off the Mediterranean Sea.
