If you are an art and history enthusiast, Barcelona is the right place for you. Plenty of museums and galleries are always prepared to welcome you through the door to show you a little of what Spain really is.
CaixaForum
This gallery contains an exquisite collection of wonderful contemporary art. Housed in a former factory and now a very futuristic building, the gallery exhibits works of the famous Miquel Barcelo.
Picasso and Juan Miro
The Picasso Museum is a celebration of the painter's life and work. His Blue Period and the Rose Period are both very well represented; you'll have the chance to see unique works of the great artists, works which were never displayed in other museums. The gallery celebrating Miro is actually the artist's gift to Barcelona. A friend of his designed the gallery and decorated it with lots of white lights, so prepare for a glorious experience the moment you step through the doors.
The Contemporary Art Museum
This amazing museum is a wonderful fiesta of contemporary art. The works displayed by the museum change frequently, so you are always unaware of what you are going to see but there is no doubt that you will be more than impressed by the all the works on show. The Museum also owns a private gallery containing no less than 1,600 pieces, but the complete collection is never on show – only part of it.
Antoni Tapies
This gallery is hosted by the building which many consider to be the origin, root and prototype, if you prefer, of Modernism. The artist is famous for creating works which were designed to carry political messages and most of them are displayed on the walls of this gallery.
The Museo Maritim
The water and especially the sea played the most important role in the life of medieval Spain. There is a comprehensive display of maritime history in the Museo Maritim, complimented by intricate replicas of ships together with audio visual displays and details regarding the lives of sailors.
The Catalan Art Museum and the Pre-Columbus Art Museum
Catalan Art is really unique; just think about the Romanesque elements and you will understand its beauty. The museum is the perfect opportunity to see objects dating back to the middle Ages or more recent works that are just a few decades old. The Pre villa lloret Columbian civilizations played an important role in the history of this country, so you'll see objects, masks, even jewelry pertaining to them. A little nonconformist, the Chocolate Museum is a place your children will adore.
