Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site
An absolute must-see in Atlanta is the massive Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site that traces the life of the famous American civil rights leader who was born in Atlanta. Here you will find out more about what inspired his life's work. From the historic site you can stroll along a mile and a half landscaped trail, or 'Freedom Park', to reach the Carter Center.
The Carter Center
The Carter Center is a museum complex in Atlanta that is devoted to the advancement of human rights in the USA and globally, and is a memorial to Jimmy Carter, who was the President of the United States between 1977 and 1981. The museum has lovely gardens, including a Japanese and butterfly garden, and, located on a hilltop in the city, has great views of downtown Atlanta.
Center for Civil and Human Rights
The Center for Civil and Human Rights is located in the grounds of the gorgeous Centennial Park. The centre is an elegant, contemporary museum that was built in 2014 at a cost of $68 million. The building itself has attracted much attention in the city, whilst its contents are devoted to the American civil rights and global human rights movement.
Martin Luther King Jr Birthplace
The humble home of the famous American civil rights leader, Dr Martin, is now open to visitors within popular guided tours. Go early as they fill up quickly. Dr Martin Luther King Junior was born and buried in Atlanta and his home located in the same vicinity as the Martin Luther National Historic Site, is definitely worth the extra 30 minutes it takes to tour the house.
Ebenezer Baptist Church
End your tour of Atlanta's long civil rights history at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the home of the congregation that was once led by the civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Junior, and one of the most well-known churches in America.
