Abergavenny in The Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales

Stay in Abergavenny in the Brecon Beacons National Park and you will have a wonderful family holiday. The town is often thought of as the gateway to the National Park and provides all you could wish for whether you are visiting for a short break or longer holiday. The town nestles in the Usk Valley and is rich in architecture, history and culture. It is a perfect base to explore the region along with being a thriving market town.

The Brecon Beacons National Park has spectacular scenery to say the least and is very popular with outdoor enthusiasts. The area is excellent for hill walking and three long distance trails actually run through the park. The Beacons Way is a long distance footpath which is aimed at serious, experienced walkers. It runs over one hundred miles from Abergavenny to Llangadog. Offa's Dyke Path National Trail passes through the eastern edge of the Park and offers amazing views over the Welsh Marches. The Taff Trail, which is fifty five miles long, joins Brecon to Cardiff.

There are a number of outdoor pursuits businesses operating in the area where you can participate in activities such as climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, kayaking and caving.

The Brecon Beacons is excellent for canoeing whether you are a beginner or expert. It is possible to go canoeing on the River Wye, River Usk (in winter months with a permit), the Brecon and Monmouth Canal, Llangorse Lake and Pontsticill Reservoir.

The region is also excellent for those interested in exploring underground cave systems. In actual fact it boasts one of Britain's longest caves – Ogof Ffynnon Ddu. For people who don't actually want to participate in proper caving the National Show Caves at Dan-yr-Ogof provide the whole family with the opportunity to view spectacular underground caverns.

As well as the marvellous outdoor opportunities for climbing the area also has two indoor climbing centres. These are great for when the weather is too bad to take part in rock climbing out of doors.

.

The Brecon Beacons is recognised as providing good opportunities for horse riders and the park has opened up a number of equestrian routes. There are also a number of horse friendly places to stay.

The Brecon Beacons also has many excellent cycling routes, both on and off road to suit people of all ages and abilijties. For those of you who are very adventurous enjoy the thrill of mountain biking in this wonderful landscape
