The History of Page, AZ

Page, named after former U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner John C. Page, is one of the youngest communities in the United States, having been incorporated as a town in March of 1975. According to the city's official website, Page is home to over 9,000 people. It was founded as a housing camp for those working on the Glen Canyon Dam in 1957. Over the years that it took to build the dam, temporary homes, trailers, and roads gave way to a more permanent settlement. Page sits atop Manson Mesa and overlooks both Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam. It was chosen as the building site for the dam and lake due to the facts that the area forming the basin could contain a large amount of water and the canyon walls were strong enough to support the needs of the dam.

Today, both the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell are major components in the water storage and hydroelectric power generation processes for states in the Southwest. Page is also part of a recreation area visited by more than three million people each year.
