Bhopal – a Magical City With Great Culture

Bhopal a historic place which today is the second largest city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is the capital of the state. Situated amidst two beautiful artificial lakes the city is often referred as the city of lakes. It is a beautiful place that is situated on the most richest and fertile lands in the centre of India. The city was originally called Bhojpal after king Bhoj, as he was the founder of the city and the lakes that surround it. However, with the passage of time the name of the city changed and finally settle at Bhopal. During its heyday, the city was one of the most prosperous Hindu cities of that era. At the meantime, as the Paramara kings (the dynasty of Raja Bhoj) lost their reign, the city also lost its significance. It was demolished multiple times and got badly ruined. Following the Hindu rulers, the city then came under the reign of the Mughals. Dost Mohammed, a governor who served under Aurangzeb, is considered to be the new founder of the city who in the post-Paramara era established a princely province on the same site where the old city existed. He and his progeny ruled the place till the independence of the country, after which the city finally merged into Indian Union.

A good to know fact about the city's history; unlike most of the medieval kingdoms Bhopal was under the region of women administrators for several centuries. In the concerned era, when the rest of the kingdoms were basically ruled by kings and men rulers, Bhopal was ruled by the begums, who were the wives of Mughal emperors and administrators. Qudisa Begum is the first female ruler of the place, who was succeeded by her only daughter Sikandar. Meanwhile, though the city was under the rule of Muslim rulers, but major percentage of the city's populous were still Hindus.

Meanwhile, if one is planning a trip to the Bhopal it is important to note that Bhopal has humid subtropical climate, which get from hot to hotter during peak summer season. The temperate could go as high as 47 degree C. Whereas the lowest recorded temperature drop is 9 degree C. Monsoon starts in late June and stays till September end. It rains moderately here. Meanwhile, the post monsoon season, when the whole environment is pretty much cleansed by the monsoonal rains, is the ideal time for a visit of the city. Also, accessing Bhopal is easy, for the fact that there are frequent trains and flights available to the place. The domestic airport is well-connected to Mumbai, Delhi, and Indore.

The tourism aspect of Bhopal is one significant facet of the place. It is an ideal tourist destination where one finds every face and pleasure of tourism. To name the most significant tourist attractions of the place include: Van Vihar National Park, Upper Lake (created by Raja Bhoj), Bharat Bhawan, Sanchi Stupa, Regional Science Centre, National Museum of Mankind, Sair Sapata, Birla Museum, and Moti Masjid etc. Each one of these are the major landmarks of the city and are within easy reach.
