Parks and forests cover the almost fifth percent of Oslo in Norway so it is no wonder that people call this town a green city. Oslofjord surrounds the city, and any of the 40 islands can be reached within 10 minutes with a ferry ride from Oslo. Flora and fauna on the one part of island are protected and it's registered as a natural reserve.

On Island you will also see ruins of the Cistercian monastery, built in the 12th century, by English monks. It's also good to know that camping is not permitted and you won't see any summerhouse on Hovedoya Island. Another eco place worth visiting while in Oslo is Ostensjovannet Lake, which is located just 5 kilometers from city center. The tour to this lake will give you an opportunity to experience a rich bird life since this is the home for 200 bird species. Østensjøvannet is a unique wetland and a protected nature reserve. The walk around Østensjøvannet is approximately 4.5 km and the walk around Klopptjern will take approximately 7 km. Walking trails are relatively flat, wide and child friendly; it has only a one small hill. In winter there are ski trails and in the early spring when the snow melts, road can be muddy.
