Enjoy a Day Out With The Trains of Devon

If you are visiting the county of Devon, you will never run out of exciting things to see and do. Riding a train is one of the ways that you can enjoy the beautiful countryside and sceneries along its route. A train ride also gives you time to sit down and relax. If you enjoy taking train rides and want to experience some interesting ones during your Devon vacation, you can try out the following railways that will provide you a day of fun and relaxation. The stations are accessible if you are staying at the popular Devon holiday cottages so make sure you spend some time in this activity.

  • Lynton & Barnstaple Narrow Gauge Steam Railway
  • Woody Bay Station
  • Martinhoe Cross, Parracombe
  • Barnstaple, Devon

If you have long wanted to take a memorable train ride, you must step out of your Devon holiday cottages and go to the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway which is currently being rebuilt to its original magnificence. This railway was originally opened in 1898 and has a gauge of one foot eleven and a half inches or 600mm. Unfortunately it was closed in 1935 but is now owned by a charitable trust. The rebuilding work is being done by unpaid volunteers and by the time the whole project is done, the entire 19 miles between Lynton and Barnstaple will be reopened. This railway route is one of the most well-known and picturesque one. Today, there is a one mile section that has been reopened and visitors can travel by trail along this original “L & B Railway” route. It will pass along the Heddon Valley right near Parracombe in the Exmoor National Park. You can try out the train ride everyday from late March until early November starting 10:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in July & September, 3 p.m. in December and 4 p.m. during the other months. You can ride all day for just 7 for adults, 3 for children 5 to 14 years, 18 for family of 2 adults and 3 children, 5 for seniors. This is one adventure that your children will be talking about long after you have arrived back in your Devon holiday cottages.

  • South Devon Railway
  • The Station, Dart Bridge Road
  • Buckfastleigh, Devon

One of the amazing things you can do out of your Devon holiday cottages is to take a fantastic train ride on the South Devon Railway. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in West Country and is suitable for all ages. This ride will take you along the seven mile route between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a grand GWR steam engine. You will see several beautiful places along the way especially since it will be passing along one of the beautiful river of England. At the Buckfastleigh station, there is a play area, garden, museum, workshop, refreshment area, gift shop and a riverside picnic area that you can enjoy before or after your train ride. The Totnes SDR station is just a few minutes from Totnes town so you can go and explore the place before you head back to the relaxing Devon holiday cottages.
