Mount Abu, true to its sobriquet, “the oasis in the desert”, is a beautiful hill town in the western state of Rajasthan. The diverse and fertile land of the town is home to rivers, waterfalls, lakes, interesting rock formations, and the evergreen forests. Formerly, Arbudaanchal or Arbudaranyaas in the Hindu mythology “The Puranas”, the town has several religious legends still lingering in its old streets. According to one of the popular legend the town is the place where the life of Nandi – the bull of Lord Shiva was saved by a serpent, named Arbuda. On reference of the fact, the town got its name Arbudaranya, which over the centuries gradually changed to Abu. Historically, the town is famous for its long association with the Gujaras. There are many historical evidences, such as the inscriptions and epigraphs, that also include the popular “Tilakamanjari of Dhanpala”, solidifying conjunction of the two.
Today, the Mount Abu is a major highlight in the central and western Indian tourists circuit. It is a complete tourist town. Being the only hill station in the state and receiving a pleasant climate almost year-long, when the rest of the regions of the state get scorched by the summer heat, are two good reasons sufficient enough to raise one's interest in the town. It is popular for its panoramic views and is home to some of the most revered temples in the country. Besides, because there exist a good range of budget hotels in Mount Abu, a trip to the city is within the budget of many.

Nakki Lake Mount Abu

The Dilwara Temples in particular are worth mentioning. These are magnificent structures on the land that were built between 11th-13th centuries AD, and own a huge religious significance among the Jains. There also exists an interesting rock formation that is called as the Toad Rock on the reference that it somehow resembles a toad. It is one of the prime attractions of the town and is pretty popular among the children. The rock formation is nearby another popular tourist destination in the town, the Nakki Lake. The lake is one of its kind lake. It is the highest artificial lake in the nation and is popular spot for boating. Clear-sparkling water fills the lake, and complementing the beauty are the verdant hills that surrounds the lake on all sides. Boating charges are quite normal; Rs 75 for two-seater paddle boat for half an hour and Rs 150 for 4 seater paddle boat.
Legends say that the Nakki lake was formed by the Gods themselves. It is believed that they dug the lake by their bare hands and nails (which called Nakh in Hindi), hence giving the lake its name. The other must visit places in Mount Abu include: Gyan Sarovar, Shri Raghunathji Temple, Adhar Devi Temple, Honeymoon Point, Guru Shikhar,Sunset Point, Gaumukh, and Peace Park.
Apart from the nature and the temples, adventure tourism is yet another aspect of Mount Abu tourism. The town is located in the Aravali range and offers adventure actions in abundance. Checking out the Trevor's Crocodile Park and the Mount Abu wildlife Sanctuary is one cool thing to do. The Trevor's Tank is nature blessed place in the region, replete of all the necessities of nature and was named after the engineer who built it.
Coming to accommodations, being a major tourist destination there is a good range of lodging options in the town. Most of them belong to the mid-range category, but one may also find cheap to luxury hotels as well.
