Explore Pakistan’s Mega City

Karachi is the former capital and the most populous city in Pakistan in South Asia, and the fifth largest metropolitan city in the world. Karachi is Pakistan's premier industrial and financial centre, as well as a major transport hub, with the country's busiest airport, plus ports that handle almost all of the country's foreign trade. Consequently, it is a diverse and cosmopolitan city, representing almost all sides of traditional and modern day life in Pakistan. Just a few days in Karachi would give you a unique insight into the culture of Pakistan, and South Asia. Here we take you through some of the city's highlights, so you can head straight to the centre of this amazing country on your next visit. When you are ready to book, contact Brightsun Travel about an incredible range of cheap air tickets to Karachi, including exciting stopover tours on the way.

Museums & Galleries

Whilst in Karachi you could spend time exploring the city's many incredible museums, including the National Museum of Pakistan, which has exhibits dating back millions of years. At the Mohatta Palace Museum, located in the exclusive seaside neighbourhood of Clifton, you could explore an elaborate building with important art works on show. Alternatively, head to the beautiful Jinnah House Museum and explore the private residences of Flag Staff House.

Beaches

Backed by the Arabian Sea, Karachi offers some great central beaches to while away a hot afternoon, including Sandspit and Manora Beach. Or, visit the Clifton Beach, located in Clifton, one of Karachi's most desirable seaside neighbourhoods, and watch locals gather in their hundreds at the weekend. Travel just 40 kilometres out of town and you will reach French Beach, a haven for expats and the Karachi elite.

Historical Sights

In Karachi you could visit the site of the Ziarat of Abdullah Shah Gazi, a monument dedicated to a 9th century Sufi, where you can experience Qawwali (Islamic devotional singing). Or, head 30 kilometres outside Karachi and you could visit the incredible Chaukhandi tombs, and explore elaborate sandstone carvings. Finally, take a short ferry ride from the city and you will reach Manora Island, where you can explore the remains of a 19th century Hindu temple.

Architecture

All around Karachi you will find structures from the British Raj, and examples of colonial-era Indo-Saracenic architecture. Start your tour of the city's architecture at Frere Hall, a beautiful building built during the British Raj, before heading to the Empress Market, Karachi's oldest market, built in the 1800s. Then onto the Karachi Port Trust Building and the National Academy of Performing Arts for fine examples of Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture.
