Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta, is one of the four major metropolitan cities in India. Often referred as a very busy state, the city is best known for the Howrah bridge. The Howrah bridge is a cantilever bridge over the Hooghly river and is one of the major attractions in the city. The bridge is named so because it links two cities in West Bengal and they are : Howrah and Kolkata.
Besides the Howrah bridge, there are several other places to visit in Kolkata. Some of these include: Victoria Memorial, Marble Palace, Indian Museum, Eden Gardens, Nicco park, Fort William, Rabindra Sarobar, Aquatica, and General Post Office etc. These are the prime attractions of the city, and it's somewhat recommended that every visitor to the city must check all these places.
The city is also famous for contributing a lot to the India cinema and culture. The city has offered several well-known personalities, such as Rabindra Nath Tagore, Buddhadev Bose, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mother Teresa, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, C. V. Raman, Amartya Sen, and others.
During the British rule, this city was one of the prime cities in India. The Kolkata port was the major medium through which the Britishers exported and imported lots of goods and spices. It is the oldest operating port in India and also played a major role in Second World War. The port was bombed twice by the Japanese air force. Since the city enjoyed a vital status among the popular cities in India during the British rule, so the impact of British culture can easily been seen in the lives of people and the streets of the city.
Added to that, the city is also known for being one of the most spiritual cities in India. A vast majority of the local population here, is covered by Hindus and Muslims. Additionally, Christianity is the third major religion practised in the city.
