Five Things You Must do in Amritsar

The glittering and thriving city of Amritsar is a spiritual hub for many Sikh followers that exhibit a glorious past and magnificent future. The effervescent and vigorous cultural background of the city charms many devotees and tourists all around the year.

These days, many people holidaying in Delhi plan a weekend visit to Amritsar by simply hiring taxi from Delhi to Amritsar. If you are also planning a holiday in this spiritual center with your loved ones, then make sure you must do these five things and include them on your to-do-list.

  1. Holy Dip at Golden Temple – Originally, the foundation of Golden Temple was laid by Pir Mian Mir of Lahore, but later it was rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, after Ahmed Shah Abdali devastated it. Taking a dip in the holy water of Amrit Sarovar is believed to rinse the soul and free the body from many diseases. So, if you are visiting Amritsar, make sure you take the holy dip at Golden Temple.
  2. Flag Down Ceremony At Wagah Border – Located 30 kilometers from Amritsar, Wagah Border is the only road crossing to Pakistan. Every day during evening hours, unique flag down ceremony is held which is followed by synchronized marching of soldiers and is witnessed by numerous Indians, Pakistanis and foreign tourists. Many people prefer getting their binoculars to have a better view of the entire event.
  3. Pay a visit to Jallianwala Bagh – Jallianwala Bagh is a defining monument in the city that reveals the struggle of people for independence and the horrific massacre. The sections of walls in the opposite side of the park have visible marks of bullets and tourists can also witness Martyr's well to recall the history.
  4. Shop Traditional Punjabi Jutti & Phulkari – Amritsar is known for handicraft items. From roadside shops to showrooms, the stores are flooded with unique handcrafted items. The most famous among the range of handicraft is phulkari embroidery. Many tourists shop for dresses, dupattas and shawls with intricate phulkari embroidery that is worth for money. The traditional footwear 'Punjabi Jutti' is another popular item that is all the rage and is preferred by the natives. Studded with sequins, stone and beads; Punjabi Jutti compliments all kinds of traditional wears.
  5. Try Amritsari Machhi – Amritsar is known for scrumptious, lip smacking and spicy Punjabi cuisine. While holidaying in Amritsar, you can book taxi cabs for trying all the street side mouthwatering dishes and fine dining restaurants for non vegetarian delicacies. But one thing that you must not forget is Amritsari machhi. The fresh pieces of boneless fish sole coated in spicy gram flour and cooked in local spices is a delight for gastronomes.

Amritsar is a city with tremendous attractions, blessed with sociable and hospitable people that have a stunning lifestyle. Distance from Delhi and Amritsar is nearly 460 kilometers and people traveling from Delhi to Amritsar can opt for cabs in Delhi to make their holidaying experience memorable.
