How to Find Work in Australia When You’re a Foreigner

If your dream is to move to Australia, you will have to find a job there.

To do that, there are several options.

1. If your occupation is in one of the Australian states' occupation lists, you can apply for a visa through their website. For instance, here is the webpage for Western Australia:

https://www.migration.wa.gov.au/services/skilled-migration-wa/occupations-in-demand

2. If it's not on the list and you are between 18 and 30 years old, you can apply for a work holiday visa. You will be able to work for an Australian company for 6 months, and then you will have to change company. It is not very practical, but if your first company likes you, they may very well sponsor you for a real work visa later.

-When you apply for a job, you should have a good looking resume written in proper English. You can visit a website like https://www.elance.com/ to find a translator or an English editor to help you. DO NOT PUT YOUR PICTURE in your CV ! It is not allowed by the law, and the company won't even look at it.

-Then, look for jobs on Australian jobs search engines like for instance https://au.jora.com/ and type your skills in the search field. If you speak another language, type it to find jobs where they need your language skills. That's a good idea because not many Australians speak another tongue. If you speak an Asian language is a bonus! Another way is to network with people from your community. Try to make friends with them in libraries or in groups like meetup. Then, you can see if they have connections in companies and apply for jobs. That's how lots of people find a job nowadays in Australia.

-When you go to the interview, you should make an effort with the way you look, but you should also be relaxed. Managers in Australia are quite casual and friendly, their door is always open for employees so it's not like in Europe or other countries. You should show that you have a good sense of humour and that you can bring something to the company.

-The fields where companies are recruiting foreigners are banking, marketing, translation, retail. Cities like Sydney get many tourists, so they need foreigners to great them in their stores.

Good luck!
