Introduction to Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve

Aptly located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand state, the renowned national park The Corbett National Park, is the oldest forest reserve in India. It was established in 1936 in order to preserve the famous Bengal tigers that were on the verge of extinction, and was named after the legendary British tiger hunter Jim Corbett. He was greatly revered by the locals of the Kumaon region for shooting down the tigers who developed the taste of human flesh. It is him who also played a key role in forming the reserved park and also put Kumaon on the map of the nation by writing about the region in his book The Man-Eaters of Kumaon.
Replete of natural wealth, the Corbett National park is one of the excellent protected parks in the nation. It is a rich and diverse protected forest that has 488 species of plants, above 586 species of resident and migratory birds, 33 species of reptiles, and seven species of fish and amphibians. It is spread across 1,318.54 sq. km for diverse land that is capped by a thick layer of forests and consists of ridges, ravines, waterbodies, small plateaus and savanna. There also exists a valley that is called Patli Dun and is formed by the river Ramganga. The park is divided into five zones, namely Bijrani, Dhikala, Domunda, Jhirna and Sonanadi. Out of these Dhikala is the highlight as it is here where there is the high concentration of animals that one hopes to see in the park. The protected forest is hugely covered by the Sal trees. Besides, the other major species of flora found in the region include: Semal, Kuthber, Ber, Khingan, Chbilla, Dhak, Bakli, Bamboo, Bel, Kharpat, Khair, Rohini, Pula, and Sissoo.

Corbett National Park

The Corbett National Park is one of the tourist destinations in the nation that are flocked by visitors in the counts of tens and thousands. The good thing is that since the establishment of the park there has been a significant rise in the count of tigers. The park opens for the visitors in the months of mid-September to mid-June. Without doubt the tigers are the prime attractions in the park. However, even with the good count of tigers in the park, sighting the tiger take some luck as they are neither tracked or baited. But, it is quite certain that one doesn't gets disappointed by his tour of the park. The park is simply rich of flora and fauna. The most commonly wildlife seen here include: elephants (200 to 300 in number), barking deer, langur monkeys, rhesus macaques, hog deer,bears, peacocks, and sambars. If lucky one also may see monitor lizards, gharials, mugger crocodiles, leopards, wild boars, and jackals.
