Island Cat Tops Charters in La Paz For Whale Shark Tours

Since the mid-1980s Cabo San Lucas has steadily risen as a favorite vacation hot spot for tourists from around the world. The sunny weather, white sand beaches, and no-bad-days vibe makes Cabo an easy go-to when planning a holiday. But what many vacationers don't know is that just two hours away sits La Paz, the capital city of California Baja Sur, and a virtual hotbed of fun vacation activity not found in Cabo.

La Paz is the largest city in the state of BCS, with a total population of 220,000. Eco-tourism is the city's biggest industry, as October through April sees the city alive with out-of-towners. This is the time of year when the whale sharks return from their long migration to feed in the Sea of Cortez, and it has become one of the largest draws for tourists . What's all the fuss? Well, not only is whale shark the largest fish in all of the oceans, but guests have the opportunity to jump into the water and swim right next to them as they feed. Not to worry, all is safe. Whale sharks are not dangerous to humans, and instead prefer to munch on plankton and krill for their dinner, using filter pads at the back of their throat to sift through the thousands of gallons of water they gulp up at a time.

Many charter companies in La Paz offer quick trips to one of the three sanctioned feeding areas, allowing guests to snorkel with the gentle giants for a short period of time before returning dockside. But one company believes that a day spent swimming with whale sharks is an experience unmatched, calling on higher standards to make it even more memorable.

Island Cat is a large and spacious catamaran, with hulls spanning 30 feet, and room enough to hold up to 35 guests comfortably. Snorkeling with whale sharks is an excursion the crew sees as much more than just a hop into an ocean with a giant fish- it is a day of relaxation, a day of pampering, and even a day of education.

The adventure begins with front-door pickup by a friendly crew member, who helps guests into the roomy 18-seat van, handing them a chilled water for the ride. Upon arrival at the dock, guests are guided to the boat, where the crew readily awaits. A short safety brief by the Captain then Island Cat is underway, carrying guests toward the fun.

As they cruise, a breakfast of fresh pastries, fruit and yogurt and unlimited sodas, beer, or drinks from the open bar are available to guests. The trip to the feeding grounds is an opportunity for guests to eat, drink, and relax, allowing the crew members to cater to their needs.

A few minutes before arrival, the onboard Marine Biologist offers a short tell-all about the whale shark, allowing time for a Q&A. As the designated snorkel leader, she also assists guests with their wetsuit and snorkel gear needs, offering instructions and tips about the time spent in the water swimming with whale sharks.

Whale sharks are the largest known species of fish, growing up to 41.5' (the largest on record), and weighing in at about 40 tons. Once the massive white-spotted fish has been located – usually found in schools of three to five, divers should be prepared to jump in the water. Depending on whether the shark is eating vertically or as it moves, a brisk swim may be necessary. Either way, guests will find themselves within mere feet of the colossal endangered species, the Whale Shark, the largest fish on planet earth. It is to be a memorable moment.

But the memories don't stop there for guests aboard Island Cat. Lunch awaits, prepared by an onboard chef with fresh, organic ingredients. As the boat cruises back to the dock, guests are offered additional snacks and drinks while they relax in the sunshine.

To swim with a whale shark is to enjoy an experience worthy of a bucket list. And the experience is enhanced by additional amenities and stellar customer service by Island Cat and her crew.
