Referred to as the Gateway of the Wayanad, Lakkidi is the most visited hill station in the entire district. That is the importance of any entrance point! The place is notable for its stunning peaks, shining streams, and dense forests. Being the second highest receiver of annual rainfall on the planet to fill several lakes, streams, and falls, Lakkidi has become a boater's heaven. The surrounding mountains attract trekkers and climbers, while the dense forests pull bird watchers and animal lovers. In this way, the different landscapes attract diverse visitors from all parts of the world.
Attractions
The major attraction here is the Lakkidi View Point, a ghat pass that is at 700m. It is one of the highest sites in the Wayanad district. From here, the scenic view of the lofty mountain peaks, royal foliage, roaring stream, and the bird's eyesight of the deep valley and twisting roads are breathtaking. In this way, the ghat road is the best place for sightseeing.
The Pookode Lake is another attraction as a scenic freshwater lake amid steep slopes and evergreen forests. The unique aspect of this lake is that it looks more or less like the India's shape. This perennial lake is only one of its kinds in the state. It is rich in cyprinid fish species that live only in this lake, other fish species, and blue lilies, and other fish species. Surrounding the lake is the forest with many wild animals and birds. Other tourist attractions here are boating, handicrafts, children's park, aquarium, and spices emporium.
The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, or the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, is the most visited attraction after the lake. Nestled on densely forested territory, the sanctuary attracts birdwatchers for spotting egrets, peacocks, snipes, babblers, peafowl, bulbuls, and cormorants. Apart from the birds, the sanctuary is also the dwelling place of several exotic animals such as Asian elephants, gaurs, sloth bears, leopards, sambars, cheetahs, and spotted deer. Excitingly, you can enjoy an elephant ride and explore the sanctuary by taking the permission of the Forest Department.
Trekking is another admirable tourist activity, which coupled with camping, offers a great way to explore the undisturbed part of the area. Some of the most awesome treks of the world are here, which are gateways to capture the scenes of waterways, peaks, temples, and forests.
