Madrid’s Geography And History

A special country

Europe is one of the most interesting continents, one that has always attracted tourists due to its amazing heritage. Among the European countries, Spain is a special one: it is an amazing place on the earth, a country where a tourist can find anything starting with diverse landscapes, continuing with spectacular cities and villages and finishing with absolutely fantastic customs and traditions. Just offer the country a little bit of your trust and you will see that you will definitely want to go back there at least once in a lifetime. The magnet that attracts people to Spain is so powerful that it seems unreal.

A special city

Madrid is not just a simple capital of a European country: it is a city where the combination between the old and the new and the cosmopolitan and the traditional is present at every single level, making you feel like in an unreal world. The atmosphere in Madrid is very special; some say that what you feel in Madrid you won't feel in any other city in Spain, so why not try it yourself?

A few facts about Madrid

The Castilian meseta which in English means ''plain'' is the one that hosts in its centre the spectacular Madrid. The city appeared in 852 AD with the purpose of becoming a fortress to protect Toledo; the Moors are the ones who built it and the ones who they were fighting against were the Christians. In 1085, the Christians conquered it from the Moors and 1561 is the year when Phillip II decided to make it the capital of the country. The centuries that followed are the ones that gave Madrid its great monuments that tourists visit today: the City Hall in 1630, the famous Plaza Mayor built between 1590 and 1790 and last but not the least, the absolutely overwhelming Palacio Real built in 1764. The city had to resist a series of historical periods: the Bourbon, the French, even the Nationalists and the Republicans had strong words to say in Madrid. However, the 19th and the 20th centuries are the ones that created the Madrid you see today, a city that has everything from medieval buildings to skyscrapers that were built in the 1940s and the 1950s. I am sure that to your ears, Madrid sounds like an interesting city; you should know that it really is and you should visit it at least once!
