May Events in Waikiki

May is one of the best times for a Hawaiian vacation. The weather is usually quite nice, occupancy rate is down and costs are relatively inexpensive. What better time to learn to ride the waves in Waikiki or catch a big-wave surf meet on Oahu's famous North Shore? During the month of May there are lots of events taking place, here are a few that might interest you:

90th Annual Lei Day Celebration is on May 1st, this event features the annual Lei Court, as well as local entertainment and hula halau. Hawaiian artisans share their talents and skills with exhibits and demonstrations throughout the day along with food vendors.

Cinco De Mayo Celebration Block Party is on May 5, local, Mexican and Puerto Rican restaurants will feature seasonal specialties, alongside Honolulu's landmark establishments. Hawaii's favorite Latin DJs on three stages. 6pm-10pm. Chinatown – Nuuanu Street, between Puuahi & King Streets and Hotel Street between Smith & Bethel Streets.

Makapuu Twilight Concert Series is on May 6, bringing Hawaii's favorite music artists to one of O'ahu's most memorable venues.

May Day Lei Day is on May 6, featuring live music, hula performances, cultural artisans, local vendors, and a special appearance by Sunny Leutu of Halau Ke Kai O Kahiki. Free event at from 10am.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach Challenge May 7, a fun-filled day of competitive outrigger canoe, stand up paddle and kayak races, free island entertainment and a craft marketplace. 9m-2pm at Hilton Hawaiian Village Duke Kahanamoku Beach & Lagoon.

Thumbelina is on May 6 & 13, based on the popular fairytale about a tiny girl born from a flower who ventures into a new world filled with wonder, this original telling of the story will use technology, puppets and original artwork to create a real time storybook before your eyes. Performances at 4:30pm (May 13th special sensory-friendly/ASL show also at 11am) at Tenney Theatre, Corner of Beretania St. and Alakea St., Honolulu.

On May 11 the 25th Annual World Fire-knife Championships features children from as young as six years old to the most experienced performers, all will compete in their respective divisions seeking to win the coveted title of World Fire-knife Champion.

Hawaii Gem & Mineral Show will be on May 12-14, offering minerals, mineral jewelry and gemstones for sale to the public.

14th Annual International Honolulu Triathlon is on May 14th, all ages and skill levels are welcome to join our race and compete against fellow triathletes from around the world. Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park, 5am throughout the morning.

Star of Honolulu Mother's Day Cruise is also on May 14, come indulge in a delicious Taste of Hawaii Buffet with a “champagne” toast. Plus, enjoy hands-on Hawaiian culture activities of lei making and hula and ukulele lessons.

On May 27, Na Mele O Ko Olina hosts some of Hawaii's best Slack Key and 'Ukulele musicians, as well as 40 Hawaiian artists who display their artwork for sale.

8th Annual Haleiwa SUP Race is on May 28, a beautiful downwind paddle from Waimea Bay to Surf N Sea.

Lantern Floating in Hawaii on May 29, Memorial Day, tens of thousands gather at Ala Moana Beach to honor the fallen, feel a connection with loved ones who have passed, and to remember all beings that have existed over time immemorial. Prayers include those who died in all conflicts and wars, in natural or man-made disasters, and accidents, famine or disease. Over 6,000 lanterns will be floated staring at 6:30pm.
