Nestled at 2,082 meters on the Dhauladhar Range, McLeodGanj is a pretty cool tourist destination for all those who wish to enjoy a tranquil but naturally rejuvenating and spiritually uplifting holiday. The hill town is nestled in upper Dharamsala and is famous as the legendary seat of the His Holiness, Dalai Lama. Being named after the former Punjab Governor of British rule, David McLeod; the town was formerly a British garrison but is now the administrative headquarters of the exiled Tibetan Government. Therefore, you will get to see a mixed culture of Buddhists and Tibetans. In fact, the town is a real epitome of Tibetan culture and Buddhist rituals. From the point of view of tourism, the town attracts people with its myriad of several ancient temples, natural spots, Buddhist handicrafts, and monasteries.
The Major Attractions
The main attraction in the hill station is Tsuglagkhang temple complex. Situated at the town's southern end, the complex is the holy abode Dalai Lama, the Namgyal Monastery, and shrines of Sakyamuni Buddha, Padmasambhava, and Avalokitesvara. It goes without saying that the complex's ambiance is resonated by Buddhist practices.
Reachable by taxi, the monastery is open for public visit except for the monk residences. The Namgyal Monastery encloses the leader's residence overlooked by the Dhauladhar ranges. Other attractions in the complex are a Tibetan museum, a bookshop, a cafeteria, prayer wheels, and library. Visitors are allowed to move anywhere in the complex without any obstacles and difficulties. Apart from meeting the leader that's not an easy thing to do, you can enjoy viewing the paintings of sculptural tales and Tibetan leaders.
Another major attraction here is the Naam Art Gallery at Sidhbari, where you can view the permanent exhibitions of Elsbeth Buchmann's paintings and oil paintings by Alfred W Hallett. The gallery remains closed on Monday.
The architectural wonder of St. John as an Anglican church in wilderness is worth exploring in groups. Made in the neo-gothic style, it is a perfect religious spot for those who believe in Jesus. If you love trekking, to cover the 9-km route from the town to the Triund hill.
