Nuwara Eliya – A Treasure Trove of Captivating Attractions

Located at an altitude of 6,128 ft, in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is one among the most beautiful cities of the tear-shaped country and is famous for its cold weather, lush tea gardens, boat rides among others. Furthermore, the name of the city has been translated as the city of lights, primarily because of the glorious wonders that it comprises within its territory. Not to mention the fact that, the city is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, which is the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. Also known as Little England, Nuwara Eliya is an ideal place for holiday makers and the city is flanked with amazing wonders that are worth visiting.   1. Victoria Park- Established in 1897, Victoria Park is named after Queen Victoria. Furthermore, the park stretches itself to about 27 acres and has been adorned with gorgeous lakes that beautify the park all the more. In addition, the park is also famous for bird-watching and is also favorite for kids, who enjoy miniature train ride found in the Victoria Park. Moreover, the bunch of tall eucalyptuses in the park is not to be missed while exploring the place with boat rides.
  2. Gregory Lake- Built during the British ruling in India by Sir William Gregory, the lake is a peaceful and serene environment, complete with a stretch of lush green grass as well as grazing horses where countless tourists go to relax and unwind.
  3. Sita Temple- Located in the village called Seetha Eliya, Sita Temple is one of the best places to visit in Nuwara Eliya. According to legends, it is believed that Sita was held captive here after being captured by Ravana. Furthermore, Sita Temple is a kilometer away from Hakgala Botanical Garden, which is the second largest garden in Sri Lanka.
  4. Central Market and Bale Bazaar- Also known as the winter market, Bale Bazaar is the best place to explore the local hues of the region via its clothes, handicrafts, authentic food among others.
  5. The Holy Trinity Church- Favorite spot amongst the locals and tourists alike, The Holy Trinity Church is located in between Kikilmana and Piduruthalagala. Furthermore, the church showcases charming gothic architecture and collection of memorials.

Despite the abundant natural beauty and unique geographical features, Nuwara Eliya is also known for its rich cultural features with numerous cultural sites, religious shrines and joyous fairs and festivals like Vesak Poya among others. Blessed with fantastic natural beauty, lush greenery, scenic landscape, rich flora and fauna and just right holiday ambiance, this enchanting city of Sri Lanka can give first-time visitors as well as repeaters a sense of wonder that is hard to shake off.
