Petersburg White Nights

White Nights – is phenomena of nature and something special of Petersburg when tourists take delight and local people feel proud.

Petersburg White Nights usually last from 11th of June to 2nd of July. It has become a symbol of Petersburg and during that time there are different festivals, concerts, fireworks and Folklore shows which are held in the city on the open air.

The most exciting holiday among school graduates “The Scarlet Sails” event. It is celebrated on 20th of June. Over a million people attend. The tradition is so for its spectacular fireworks and a huge water show including battles between dozens of boats full of pirates on the Neva River at the very heart of the city. The culminating moment of the event is the appearance of a massive ship with blood red sails. The Scarlet Sails show celebrating the end of school of young people about 17 who are ready to enter a new life of adults. The Beautiful Ship with Scarlet Sails sees them off symbolizing a very famous story of Assol and Grey by Alexander Grin.

White Nights have become a symbol of Mariinsky Theatre as well since 1993 when Valery Gergiev founded the colorful popular Stars of the white nights Festival. Now from June to July there are daily operas, ballets and classical concerts at the Mariinsky presenting Russian and international stars.
