Planning Your Breckenridge Vacation

The Breckenridge area was the summer hunting grounds of the Ute Indians. The 1858 gold rush brought droves of people to area in a flurry of mining activities. The town of “Breckinridge” was founded in 1859. Named after vice-president, John Cabell Breckinridge. During the civil war when Breckinridge sided with the south, the town changed the “i” to “e” in the middle of the name to avoid association with the defecting vice president.

Mining was the town's primary industry until the 1961, when the Breckenridge Ski resort opened. Over the next several years Breckenridge was transformed from a mining town to a world-class, resort vacation destination.

Over 200 inches of snow in the winter transforms Breckenridge into a winter wonderland. Old world charm, with buildings of Breckenridge's mining past, make a Breckenridge winter vacation amazing.

In the summer hundreds of miles of backcountry trails that become available. Hike any of the national parks, or rent a jeep for a day and explore the backcountry. We haven't even talked about camping, sailing, summer shopping, and other activities!

So here's somethings to think about when planning your vacation to Breckenridge. First, decide what kinds of things you'd like to do.

Start with the outdoor activities. Do you want longer days, warmer weather? Then come in the summer. If snow is your thing, obviously, come during the winter. If you want to avoid the crowds and save some money, consider coming during the “mud” seasons (mid-September-Thanksgiving, and April-Memorial Day). Lodging rates are lower, and many restaurants offer reduced pricing.

Where do you want to stay while in Breckenrige? In town, on the outskirts – accessible but remote enough to feel like you are getting away from it all. Perhaps a remote mountain house surrounded by trees and panoramic vistas? Whatever location you're looking for, you will find it in Breckenridge.

How about the amenities. Many vacation rentals in Breckenridge offer amenities you won't find in a Motel 6 in Kanorado, Kansas. But expect to pay for them. I recommend avoiding vacation by owner rentals. I know of horror stories of rentals that didn't live up to their VRBO hype. I prefer to go with rentals offered by a property management company. Here's why.

Taking care of rental properties and providing customer service is what they do. Try contacting your vacation rental homeowner at 2:00 AM about a busted water pipe!
