Saas Gourmet Trail And Nostalgic Culinary Mile 2018

What is the Culinary Mile?

The Culinary Mile turns back time – so you can see how life was in the past – with about 30 menus and a variety of local wines just waiting for you to taste them! June 19th and the 24th are dates to put in your diary to take part in these very special hikes, with September 9, 2018 being the start of the 13th Nostalgic Culinary Mile in Saas Fee.

The route follows the Sonnenweg from the Hannig mountain station to the finale in Hohnegg Alpine Resort. Saas Fee's best chefs and sommeliers will present their finest creations as you ramble through the stunning mountain scenery.

The event is a tradition in the village and is the perfect opportunity for you to experience the culture and indulge in a huge range of culinary specialities – you can choose to dress up as prizes will be awarded for the best children and best adult costumes. You'll be entertained by various music groups – and there'll be demonstrations on the village square as well as a children's programme.

Swiss MountainBrass

The Swiss MountainBrass is the first power brass band to revive the Valais Brass Band scene since 2006. You'll be inspired by young members playing their interpretation of chart hits, and traditional pieces of music. Young musicians are offered the opportunity to embark on a musical adventure characterised by showmanship, power, and dynamism.

Food and Beverages

Regional specialities, salmon trout salad, truffle fondue, and braised leg of lamb – just some of the delicacies that can be tasted on the way – and all accompanied with a glass of wine from Valais, the largest and most varied winegrowing region in Switzerland. There are about 22,000 grape growers in the 13 valleys – all converging on the main Rhone valley.

The primary white grape is Fendant – a dry wine low in acidity and with subtle character. Pinot Noir is the dominant variety of red wine, but more famous is the Dole which blends Pinot Noir and Gamay. Other varieties include Gamay and Syrah.

Your journey will begin in the company of expert wine connoisseurs from the region – along the route you'll have six more stops to sample the food and wine until you reach the final resting point where you can enjoy a wonderfully exciting end to the day.

Where to Stay

Why not book seven days of day hikes in Switzerland and indulgence in a superior double room with beautiful mountain views and hike the Saas valley during the day? The Hotel Allalin offers a package that includes a fresh breakfast buffet, a six-course evening meal, and free use of many cable cars and buses in the valley – as well as a daily lunch pack and a Metro Plus and aperitif voucher.
