“The thought 'Who Am I?' Will destroy all other thoughts, and like the stick used for stirring the burning fire, it will itself in the end get destroyed. Then, there will arise Self-realization. Self inquiry reveals the true inner self.
Such were the thoughts of the great saint Ramana Maharshi in Tiruvannamalai, SE India. He stated self-enquiry as an awareness of the awareness itself. It leads us beyond duality, as the object of meditation is ultimately revealed as the subject itself. This is difficult to understand mentally, yet when experienced life becomes more joyous.
The land of Tiruvannamalai is one of the well-known Spiritual Retreats of the world. The guru Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi is said to have cheated death at the age of 16. The experience was a near-death one, leading to complete overpower of his spiritual self over his ego. He said to have penetrated into the source of his being and back, hence the name Bhagavan (Bhagavan is generally translated as Lord or God) . Shri Ramana Maharshi later revealed the direct path of practice for self-enquiry, awakening the entire mankind, to the immense spiritual powers of the holy hill Arunachala which is now called the spiritual heart of the world. The holy mountain has been said to have called to him as a holy place, where he could devote himself to his spiritual life.
Nevertheless, the very question, “Who am I?” leads us very close to our potent self. It brings forward our real nature, or in other words, to truly mirror ourselves in an efficient way. The self-enquiry method of Ramana had never derived any rational answer. In fact every being has to understand that there can never be a rational and intellectual answer to such a question. It can only be answered when we believe in and actually state “I understand, I know who I am”. By doing this we are actually conceptualizing, anything which in reality is ineffable.
September 1st is said to be the date, when this saint arrived at Arunachala, completely guided by the belief of the self, from whence he would reveal the highest Non-dual Truth of the teachings of self-knowledge and self-inquiry. Several of the saint's devotees have recorded evidence of the preaching's of the saint, provided to all those who visited him. The teachings have been reflected and distributed in the form of books and videos.
