Take a Long Weekend to Buckhead, Atlanta

A financial leader of the southeastern United States in northwestern Atlanta is called Buckhead. Dominating the cityscape in this district are contemporary high-rise office, condominiums and apartment buildings. Also in Buckhead are beautiful communities of large homes on lovely properties with rolling hills and shade trees. Buckhead hotels offer incredible world-class accommodations for visitors, and anyone staying in the neighborhood should experience some of its history and culture as well as attractions in the greater Atlanta area.

Remarkable and Rich History

The name “Buckhead” started after Henry Irby shot a huge buck and displayed the head in a visible spot in the area. He bought about 200 acres of land in the local region from Daniel Johnson in the 1830s. At the crossroads of West Paces Ferry, Peachtree and Roswell, he established a tavern and general store.

Soon because of the natural beauty of the countryside, the wealthy from Atlanta began to buy surrounding sections of land to sprawling country homes for rural retreats from the city. Successful and wealthy citizens continued building mansions in the rolling hills of Buckhead all the way through World War I, the crash of the stock market in 1929 and the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Finally in the 1950s, the community became an official district of Atlanta. Construction soon began on a design by one of Atlanta's top architects responsible for some of its landmark modernist structures. This design on the site of what previously was Joyeuse Estate was Lenox Square. This shopping mall was the largest in the southern states. The enclosed shopping center still houses some of the most exclusive and upscale shops and department stores in the area.

What Makes this District Special Today

After rightfully gaining a reputation as a top nightclub spot in the 1980s and 1990s, Buckhead around Peachtree Road has been successfully improved and beautified. The Village in the heart of Buckhead caters to pedestrians with public parks, scenic walkways and public art in sculptures and other works. The district is known for its up-scale restaurants and high-end shops. Fine dining and shopping options are all around the Village, and the surrounding area is surrounded with those lovely historic mansions and suburbs.

Local Things to Do and See

Several amazing things to see and do are located right within Buckhead, and the Atlanta area naturally has numerous attractions. Of course, the Atlanta History Center found in Buckhead is not to be missed including features like the Swan House Mansion and the Tullie Smith House and Farm that was started in the mid-1800s. High-end shopping and browsing the art galleries and green space as well as food tours are popular activities in The Village. Additionally, cultural events with night concerts and theatre performances take place in Buckhead.

Within the local region, Stone Mountain Park is a theme and historic park with many historic, amusement and hiking activities. Then, downtown Atlanta has outstanding shopping and museums.

Planning a Long Weekend

Taking in a little local culture and history is worthwhile whether the visitors are in Buckhead for business, leisure or both. Those planning a long weekend in the area can explore the district and region by day and sleep in elegant hotels at night. Buckhead hotel suites are modern and popular for short and long stays.
