The Best Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours You Can Take on a Budget

Helicopter sightseeing is not what people typically have in mind when talking about budget travel, however, there's still no denying the fact that helicopters offer the best tours of the Grand Canyon. If you're in Las Vegas, then you're in the perfect spot to kick off a tour to the Canyon. With the right advice you will even find that there are wallet friendly options to suit a modest budget.

The Vegas Landing Tour

Without question, the city of Las Vegas is the most popular hub for Grand Canyon helicopter tours. It is close to the Canyon, and it only takes a little over half an hour to make it out there. Not only will you get to see the Canyon and the surrounding areas, but you will also fly over the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.

My all-time favorite tour is the Champagne Picnic helicopter tour that goes to the bottom of the Canyon. You will have around 30 minutes to explore at the bottom, and you will also enjoy a glass of champagne and some light snacks. The basic package is great for when you are travelling on a budget, but there are optional add-ons, like a top landing tour, or a ride on a Colorado River boat.

This isn't just a great tour because it is relatively affordable, but it is also the only tour that allows you to land inside the Grand Canyon. The West Rim is unique in this respect, as landing tours are banned at the South Rim.

Keep in mind, these tours are incredibly popular and they often sell out. You'll need to book in advance (at least two weeks prior), and make sure that you book online with your credit card. This will confirm your tickets and lock in the best price.

Air Only Tour from Vegas

If you want to cut even more from the ticket price, then you could consider a flyover tour from Las Vegas. Although you won't get to land at the Canyon, you'll still pass over the Hoover Dam, the Colorado River, the Canyon itself, and you will even fly below the rim for part of the tour. You'll experience spectacular bird's eye views that simply aren't available without taking a helicopter tour.

South Rim Tour

If the South Rim is more convenient for you, then you should go for the 30-minute helicopter ride that takes you to the remote North Rim, and back to the South Rim again. This tour will take you over some rugged wilderness, and you'll fly through the deepest and widest part of the entire Grand Canyon. The 30-minute tour is the most budget friendly tour, but if you can stretch for a little more, then there's a 50-minute tour that includes the eastern areas of the National Park.

Are There Benefits for Paying More?

Although the theme here is travelling on a budget, you might be interested to know what you get for paying a little extra. With every tour, there is a deluxe version. Basic tours mostly operate in Bell helicopters and they include a shuttle bus service to the helipad. If you go for deluxe, then you will fly in an upgraded EcoStar helicopter that features an improved viewing window (full 180 degree panoramic) and a more comfortable seating layout. Deluxe tours also include a limousine shuttle service in Las Vegas.

Conclusion

You don't have to pay a fortune to fly over the Canyon. Some tickets are priced at sub-$200, which is a pretty sweet deal compared to a number of other attractions and activities in the US. The best thing you can do is spend on the best that you can within your budget, book early, and make sure you book online with your credit card to get the best discounts. Booking in advance can mean rates are much more reasonable, and you may even find that you can book a more comprehensive tour that still fits within your budget.

Above all, prepare for adventure and enjoy one of the most beautiful scenic wonders in the world.
