The Mamoudzou Diaries

Mamoudzou is a capital city of an island named as Mayotte which is actually something of a French overseas collectivity which is lying in the continent of Africa. But still this is considered to be African territory and can be found in the general encyclopedias as such. Although being very small and having a small population, not many people know about this island. The population is only 45,000. This one is situated in the Indian Ocean. The island or country of Mayotte is not a single island however. This is a collection of many islands thus giving it the status of collectivity of French. Being a French collectivity is not a big surprise either, considering the amount of invasions that Frenchmen did in the African continent. Some have been freed and some haven't.

This one has completely separate controversy about its freedom. There have been severe political unrests considering this fact that the invasions had deep roots and deeper effects on the region. It caused major ethnic differences as well. The name of the city is another great mystery. How difficult this name is for pronouncing you will notice when you try to say it aloud. Although I will advise against it as you don't want people staring at you defiantly. The Mayotte collectivity is part of the Comoro chain by the way. The Comoro Islands are a chain of different islands situated in the African bays. The status of these Islands had been changed into departmental collectivity in the start of the 2001 year. This change was a result of the local referendums that people were demanding from a very long time. The referendum thus resulted into the approval of the changed status of collectivity as we see it now. The islands are basically identified to be situated near the country of Madagascar. There are no shopping malls in the islands. Most of the shops are scattered in single or groups.

There is no airport in the island and only connection with outside world is through airport of Mayotte. There are ferries and boat that provide transportation between the islands. Markets sprout daily and are colorful and exciting. With such a small population, it is an interesting place to relax and enjoy peace. One can walk around freely feeling the ocean breeze and calmness. With very less traffic and noise pollution, its an ideal place to relax and enjoy the simplicity of life. There are boat rides to see whales and dolphins when they come in their respective seasons mostly in summer. There are banks, hotels, restaurants and bars as well. One can find best places to eat food and watch the sunset.Another activity is barbeque on the beach.Coals are available from the shops. One can enjoy a really nice and peaceful barbeque with family or friends on the beach making it a perfect place for vacations. If one wants to get connected with the nature and go away from the routine life, Mogadishu is a perfect island to go.
