New Year's Eve at Times Square
Synonymous with New York's New Year celebrations, thousands of New Yorkers and visitors descend on the iconic Times Square to bring in the New Year. With a history stretching back to 1907, the New Year's celebrations begin at around 18:00, with performances across two stages. Although the rest of the United States has adopted the tradition, New York can lay claim to being the originators of the sparkly sphere lowered to coincide with the count down. As the New Year is welcomed, fireworks ascend into the New York skyline, illuminating the city.
Fireworks at Prospect Park
More low-key than the indulgence of Times Square, Prospect Park hosts a firework display over Park Slope. At around 2300, live music starts at the Grand Army Plaza, where you can find yourself a hot beverage. At midnight, fireworks go off at Long Meadow- with the best vantage points being at Grand Army Plaza and inside West Drive.
BangOn! NYC presents Times + Space
Stretching over nine hours, the BangOn!NYC team brings fire-breathers, contortionists, zip-line performers, and a silent disco to a secret Bushwick destination. Going into the small hours, BangOn!NYC aims to provide a New Year experience for visitors without forcing them to freeze in the cold New York winter.
New Year's Eve Ride
For something completely different, sign up to free bike ride from Brooklyn to Central Park. Just bring your bike to the Brooklyn side of Williamsburg Bridge for a group ride under a sky illuminated by fireworks. Once you've completed this peculiar tradition, you will join revelers at Central Park to bring in the new year.
Coney Island Polar Bear Club New Year's Day Swim
After the previous evening's celebrations, what better way to dust of the cobwebs than going for a swim in the Atlantic ocean? Not for you? Even if you don't wish to participate, watch those brave enough take the plunge in order to raise money for charity. Donations are made to help Camp Sunshine, a charity that supports children (and their families) who have life-threatening illnesses.
