Summer holidays are a precious time, but if you want to do a little bit more than sprawling on a sun lounger then you need to pick a destination in which there’s more on offer than just a beautiful beach. This year The Guardian newspaper picked out Malta and Croatia – resorts and cities – as providing the perfect ‘alternative’ summer holiday destinations, and I would have to say that I agree. With culture and history, beaches and sunshine (and, of course, luxury hotels to relax in) these locations really do have everything the more discerning holidaymaker is looking for.

Follow the Stylish Holiday Crowd to Croatia

Although it may not be the well-kept holiday secret it once was, there are many reasons why the beautiful Adriatic coast of Croatia has become the ‘go to’ destination for stylish European holidaymakers. From wonderful architecture, culture and history to excellent Mediterranean food and pristine beaches, there is certainly something for everyone in Croatia.

Resorts along the coastline may be getting crowded, particularly around the stunning cultural hub that is Dubrovnik, but there are still some wonderfully tranquil spots where you can avoid the crowds and drink in authentic Croatia. Resorts like Zupa Dubrovacka are a short drive from the cultural and tourist hub of Dubrovnik and offer access to the old-world Mediterranean charm and outdoor cafe living which make Croatia so appealing.

Where to Stay

For intimate, luxury accommodation in Zupa Dubrovacka try the Hotel More. With its own private beach and a beach bar built into the sea caves, Hotel More offers a completely indulgent summer getaway location.

Experience the Style and Culture of Malta

For sun and beaches, combined with elegant architecture, fascinating history and rich national culture, holidaymakers looking for something a little different should consider the island of Malta. While there are some developed tourist hotspots already on the island, I would recommend heading to the World Heritage Site of Valetta (voted the City of Culture 2018).

Steeped in history, Valetta is not only a beautiful port but a popular spot for those lucky enough to be travelling around the Med on their yachts to stop off and come ashore. The result is a wonderful cosmopolitan atmosphere, particularly in the marina, where people-watching from the elegant cafes and restaurants which line the waterfront has become a popular pastime.

Where to Stay

Looking out over the harbour, the five-star Hotel Phoenicia offers colonial luxury in the heart of the city’s restaurant and cafe district. Relax in the beautiful shaded gardens or in the elegant spacious bedrooms before strolling down to the harbour for a ‘sundown’ cocktail.

Whichever destination you choose, why not do something different with your summer holiday this year? Visit Malta or Croatia, resorts and cities, and you will discover there’s much more to getting away from it all than just soaking up the sun.
