Mount Abu, true to its sobriquet, “the oasis in the desert”, is a beautiful hill town in the western state of Rajasthan. The diverse and fertile land of the town is home to rivers, waterfalls, lakes, interesting rock formations, and the evergreen forests. Formerly, Arbudaanchal or Arbudaranyaas in the Hindu mythology “The Puranas”, the town has several religious legends still lingering in its old streets. According to one of the popular legend the town is the place where the life of Nandi – the bull of Lord Shiva was saved by a serpent, named Arbuda. On reference of the fact, the town got its name Arbudaranya, which over the centuries gradually changed to Abu. Historically, the town is famous for its long association with the Gujaras. There are many historical evidences, such as the inscriptions and epigraphs, that also include the popular “Tilakamanjari of Dhanpala”, solidifying conjunction of the two.

Legends say that the Nakki lake was formed by the Gods themselves. It is believed that they dug the lake by their bare hands and nails (which called Nakh in Hindi), hence giving the lake its name.
