Ernakulam – The Commercial Capital of Kerala

Ernakulam is known widely as the commercial capital of Kerala and it refers to the eastern portion of Kochi, lying in central Kerala. This city is considered to be in the most urban parts of Kochi and is said to have acquired its name from a Tamil word “Erayanarkulam” which translates to “Lord Shiva's Abode”. The High Court of Kerala, the Cochin Stock Exchange and the Office of the Corporation of Cochin are all situated in Ernakulam. Moreover Ernakulam used to be the headquarters of Ernakulam District as well but then the headquarters were shifted to Kakkanad. Ernakulam has occupied a quite central seat in the history of India. In fact it used to be once the capital of the Kingdom of Cochin. You can find a large number of hotels near Ernakulam railway station so as to enjoy a locational advantage and save on transportation charges.

It is rather interesting to note that Ernakulam has been the centre of human settlement ever since the Stone age. In fact, rock-cut caves and monolithic monuments like Dolmens can be found in several parts of the city and is a major centre of attraction for history buffs. Although it came to be known as Commercial Centre of Kerala not until recently, it has played a pivotal role in fostering trade relations between the outside world and kerala during ancient and medieval period. During the colonial times, Ernakulam served as the capital of the kingdom of Cochin as mentioned above.

Being counted as one of busiest and oldest metropolises of India, it has attracted visitors from around the world. Traders used to come here in search of sandalwood and exotic spices. Ernakulam has a rich heritage of courteous hospitality and still extends a warm welcome to all its visitors.
