Ernakulam is known widely as the commercial capital of Kerala and it refers to the eastern portion of Kochi, lying in central Kerala. This city is considered to be in the most urban parts of Kochi and is said to have acquired its name from a Tamil word “Erayanarkulam” which translates to “Lord Shiva's Abode”. The High Court of Kerala, the Cochin Stock Exchange and the Office of the Corporation of Cochin are all situated in Ernakulam. Moreover Ernakulam used to be the headquarters of Ernakulam District as well but then the headquarters were shifted to Kakkanad. Ernakulam has occupied a quite central seat in the history of India. In fact it used to be once the capital of the Kingdom of Cochin.
