The different culture, lifestyle and traditions of New Yorkers are highly affected by one of the most significant neighborhoods Harlem. You need to go on the Harlem tours to see the exact reason and learn the history which shaped up the city today. Harlem has a rich history which roots all the way back to 1658 when it was first founded as a Dutch village. This village was a pure settlement of the Dutch and they lived happily and practiced their customs, traditions and way of life. It started getting prosperous hence attracted people from nearby places to try living in the Dutch village. This blend of different races made Harlem a different place from all the others which surrounded and mostly comprised of a single race.
Harlem place became a colony of the Dutch and many other races. They all started to live together and shared their different customs and ways of life. But unfortunately in the 1830's it was badly hit by the economic crunch for the first time which sent the residents of Harlem in heavy debts. Unable to pay back the entire land was grabbed by the lenders and was auctioned off in small pieces. The uneven distribution of the land led to many destructions and the prosperous village totally lost what it looked before the economic crunch. It became an isolated place and African refugees found a place to settle down here. The different churches and religious buildings were reshaped and a new culture was brought by the Africans. The few original residents of Harlem remained there and they too shared some of their cultures with the new occupants of the place. The culture again went under a change under the influence of the Africans.
All these dramatic changes can be seen once you visit Harlem place in New York. Although it now a fully developed and one of the most important neighborhoods of New York, the old buildings and churches have been preserved by the authorities for the future generations to learn about its history. Harlem today holds the most famous street in the world, the 5th avenue also widely known as 5th Ave. It is famous for the huge brands' stores present on the street.
