Hyde Park is among the Royal Parks of London and is one of the largest in Central London. The park is divided into two sections by the Serpentine River and is located adjacent to Kensington Gardens. It is spread over an area of 142 hectares (350 acres) along with Kensington Gardens that is covering 111 hectares (270 acres), providing a combined total area of 253 hectares (630 acres). The park conducted several major events and activities, including the Great Exhibition of 1851 that took place between May 1 and October 11 1851 as well as the first Victoria Cross investiture on June 26 1857. It has several sites that attract interest of tourists, such as Speakers' Corner, Rotten Row, Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial and Holocaust Memorial. Meanwhile, it is also a famous destination for live rock concerts from several international artists, such as Live 8, Rolling Stones and Madonna.
Transportation
Hyde Park can be accessed through five London Underground stations – Hyde Park Corner (Piccadilly Line), Knightsbridge (Piccadilly Line), Queensway (Central Line), Lancaster Gate (Central Line) and Marble Arch (Central Line). Moreover, Bayswater tube station and High Street Kensington tube station are also located very close to it.
Hyde Park Corner
Hyde Park Corner is located in the south-east corner of Hyde Park and has been known as a major intersection that joins Park Lane, Knightsbridge, Piccadilly, Grosvenor Place and Constitution Hill. The area can be easily reached through the Hyde Park Corner tube station. The area is also an inspiration to the 1935 film Hyde Park Corner. Meanwhile, some of the memorials at Hyde Park Corner are The Australian War Memorial, Statue of David, The Royal Artillery Memorial and The New Zealand War Memorial.
The Great Exhibition
The Great Exhibition, also known as the Crystal Palace Exhibition, was the temporary structure created at Hyde Park to conduct an international exhibition in the period between May 1 and October 11 1851. A total of 13,000 exhibitors from all over the world took part in the exhibition and showcased several products, including a Jacquard loom, an envelope machine, kitchen appliances, steel-making displays and a reaping machine. The exhibition witnessed the presence of several prominent faces, including Charles Darwin, Samuel Colt and members of the Orleanist Royal Family as well as many notable writers. The exhibition took place after the huge success of French Industrial Exposition of 1844.
