The adventurous nature of the Kimberley makes it the perfect playground for children and adults alike. Natural attractions located near the hotels in Kununurra are just waiting to be explored but there's also a range of events and activities that cater for children of all ages.
Lake Argyle
The peaceful lake can easily be reached on a day trip from Kununurra hotels and features plenty of lawn area space for the kids to run around and swim. Start with a dip in the infinity pool, which overlooks the lake itself, before hiring out a couple of kayaks, or stand up paddleboards for the day. There's plenty of spots to view the lake itself and various picnic areas perfect for the kids. Finish up with a picnic of fish and chips at the resort before heading back to your Freshwater accommodation.
Teddy bears picnic
Ever year hundreds of parents and children gather at Kununurra' Celebrity Tree Park for the annual Neighbourhood House teddy bears picnic. Perfect for younger children, this one-day event features games, activities, a huge picnic, and music to raise money for the local non-for-profit. If you're kids have left their favourite bear at home, don't worry, Neighbourhood House has a few spares you can borrow for the day.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Every year thousands of children around Australia read the same book at exactly the same time as part of National Simultaneous Storytime, and Kununurra is right in on the action. The local event is held at Kununurra Community and School Library, which also hold a bunch of regular reading sessions and activities for children during the week. Visit the library's website for more.
Neighbourhood House Disco
Get out your dancing shoes and prepare to boogie the night away! This annual fundraiser is held in October at the town's Leisure Centre and is suitable for children of all ages. There's games, dancing, prizes and plenty more to entertain the kids. It's not to be missed.
Kununurra Agricultural Show
This July event is a-buzz with kid-friendly activities from cheap thrills – marvelling at the animals or holding a snake in the pet pavilion, watching equestrian activities, or the dog show – to splashing out on rides and shows bags at sideshow alley. The best of local craft and cooking is on display and there are activities throughout the day for children including circus workshops, a cooking competition and more. The night is rounded out with a glowing fireworks display.
Kununurra Speedway
For thrills and spills to keep older children entertained, head down to Kununurra Speedway to see the town's best racers on the track. Drivers travel from as far as Darwin and Broome to take part in this event. To find out more visit the club's Facebook page.
Celebrity Tree Park
Just across the road from your accommodation is a sprawling green park equipped with great views, a jetty and the best playground the town has to offer. Celebrity Tree Park is named-so because many of the trees at the park were planted by notable visitors – including former prime minister Julia Guillard, Sir Peter Cosgrove, The West Australian travel journalist Stephen Scourfield. It's the perfect place for a picnic, play date or to watch the sunrise or set.
