Ooty is a lovely tourist destination in South India as it is blessed by the best of nature. It falls in the Nilgiri region of Tamil Nadu. The region was indigenous to the Toda tribe, but later on as the East India Company discovered it in 18th century, it came under the British occupation. Ooty is covered by the eucalyptus and teak trees and hence the whole hilly region appears bluish. A flower named Kurunji also gives it a bluish appearance. This flower grows every 12 years and covers the whole region. Ooty is famously called the Queen of the Hills. You find temples, parks, hills, tall pine trees, gardens, and the old era houses that represent the colonial architecture. This all is worth exploring as you visit the town. It gets colder here in winters and pleasant in summers. The main attractions in Ooty are many. Tribal Research Center Museum showcases wide information and exhibits about the local tribes. Thread Garden offers a unique experience that is a great fusion of kitsch and art. St. Stephen's Church of 1829 is a nice historic attraction.
Doddabetta is the highest point of Ooty and provides a wide panoramic view of the valley and hills. Nilgiri Library houses more than 30,000 books, some of which are quite rare. The library was built in 1867. If you like flowers, Rose Garden is certainly the place for you. With over 20,000 rose bushes and 2,000 varieties, this garden is a nice experience for visitors. St. Thomas Church is another place of religious significance which you can see. When it comes to eating, you would find almost all sorts of cuisines which range from local to continental. Some popular restaurants and cafes in Ooty are Sidewalk Cafe, Savoy, Garden Restaurant, etc. Modern Stores is the supermarket where would can get a number of western food items. Green Shop and K Mahaveer Chand are two of the shops where you can buy some tribal souvenirs and handicrafts items. Higginbothams is a nice bookstore in the town. Just by the Ooty Lake, there is a boat house from where you can rent boats and indulge in some more fun. Most of the Ooty hotels are situated centrally and hence it is easy for guests to commute to their places of interests and the major tourist attractions.
