Built in 1296, construction took almost 150 years and the building itself wasn't consecrated until 1436. Interestingly, the Cathedral's neo-Gothic facade wasn't finished until the 19th century as the original facade was never completed. But, you didn't come here for a history lesson, you came here for the tips. So here you go:
Tip 1:
You don't have to be part of a tour group to book your tickets online. Now, being a part of a tour is a great way to experience the Duomo because a guide can give you the down low on everything you're seeing. And, when you think about it what's the point of seeing one of the world's most popular attractions and then coming away from it none the wiser? But, with that being said, you can also buy individual tickets via the Duomo's official website, they cost E 18.
Tip 2:
Your ticket does not just limit you to the Cathedral. No, no, no with your ticket you get access to everything the Duomo has to offer. That's right. This means that with your one ticket you can also see the Cathedral's iconic dome, the Baptistery, Bell Tower, Crypt, and Museum. That's a whole afternoon of exploring and sightseeing right there!
Tip 3:
The best time to visit the Duomo is not, contrary to popular belief, first thing in the morning. The reality is, and this may be a hard pill to swallow, there is no best time to visit the Duomo. There are just slightly better times to visit the Duomo. It is, after all, one of the most popular attractions in the world. But, to see the place when it isn't as heaving, consider going in the afternoon. Most package tour groups – the ones who come in on buses – will go by the end of the late morning, beginning of the early afternoon. And, with them out the way, you're only left with everyone else.
Tip 4:
Okay, so maybe less of a tip and more just something you should know. The line to climb the Duomo's cupola (dome) is a monster that inspires awe and fear and sadly, is one you can't skip. It moves slowly as at one point it becomes single file. Allow for an hour or so to go up and down. Also, if you're claustrophobic, the stairways become quite narrow, so you may want to take that into consideration. However, when all's said and done, the climb is well worth it because you are rewarded with knock your socks off panoramic views of Florence.
Tip 5:
For a fantastic meal after a full day out head to Osteria De L'Ortolano. This little place offers up stunning meals at reasonable prices and is pretty much on the Duomo's doorstep.
