Boutique hotels are quickly gaining in popularity for travelers worldwide; especially in recent years. Many have popped up in various destination, some revamped and some brand new. They are definitely in competition with the big, chain hotels since what they offer is so different in comparison. It can be said that boutique hotels are a bit more comfortable as far as atmosphere, and definitely have more character in the majority of cases.

Still, the question may remain as to what the main differences are. Saying they are more comfortable doesn't narrow it down much. Here are some of the main points to consider when choosing between a boutique hotel and a chain hotel.

The Number of Rooms

Since boutique hotels are smaller they have less rooms to offer, usually around 50 or so. A chain hotel can offer hundreds. The good part of less rooms is that means less guests and a bit more privacy. If one is not a fan of crowds, they'll appreciate what a boutique hotel has to offer in that regard. The only disadvantage here is that there may not be a room available for the travel dates in question.

Unique Design

Boutique hotels often carry a theme, even if it's a simple one. This can be seen when browsing pictures online. The theme may be just in the main portion of the hotel or it can spread to the rooms. This is a fun element for most and makes for a more interesting stay and pictures to share. In a chain hotel, every room looks exactly the same. So, anyone that wants a bit of fun on their trip should consider a boutique hotel over a chain hotel in this aspect. Whereas anyone who is more of a minimalist will prefer the big chain hotel.

Location, location, location!

Newer boutique hotels are quite easy to find, but some of the older ones aren't so visible. Be sure the hotel is in the area that is desired. If one doesn't mind being off the beaten path it can be another fun addition to the trip; however, it's best to be aware that sometimes they are tucked away in town and not near all the action. If being in the center of it all is important to the travel party, be sure to look up the boutique hotel's location on a map.

Vintage Furnishings

Some of the more popular boutique hotels have furnishings with a history. One may be able to find vintage furniture that is stunning and luxurious. If this seems like something that would be appreciated, then do give the hotel a call and see if that's the case. There is definitely more ambiance regardless.

Chain hotels may also offer luxury furnishings but they are often purchased brand new and don't carry much character in comparison.

So, which is best?

It's completely up to the travel party whether they'd prefer a boutique hotel or a big chain hotel at the destination being traveled to. In any case, a bit of research will help make the decision as no two hotels are created equal whether they're chain or boutique. Choose a site for booking that allows the choices to be compared easily and take into account every aspect from ambiance to price and of course, location. This way, the right combination of amenities will be secured and the stay will be more than memorable.

Remember though, it's okay to step outside the box. So, if never stayed at a boutique hotel now may be the perfect time to see if it's something that could be enjoyed in the future. One never knows until they try!
