Pushkar is one of the most significant pilgrimages in India. Falling within the Ajmer district of Rajasthan, Pushkar is one of the most highlighted cities of the state. The city is particularly famous of the annual Pushkar Mela, which is the largest camel festival in the world, and the 2000 years old Brahma temple. It is also often visited by the pilgrims who are on a journey to the Ajmer Sharif, the holy shrine of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti situated in Ajmer. Pushkar is a small town and amongst the oldest cities in India. Primarily a Hindu town, the city shares the borders with the famous Thar desert. It is the first desert city of the Thar desert and is known to experience very hot and dry summer.
The name “Pushkar” is a combination of two different word Push and Kar. It means “the lotus flower” and is believed to be the city of Hindu Lord Brahma. According to the most popular belief, Lord Brahma dropped a lotus in the lake situated about 1.1 k.m. from the centre of the city, following which the city came into existence. Since then the city was treated as the home of Lord Brahma.

The Brahma temple of Pushkar is believed to be the only few of the Brahma temples that exist in the world, which makes the city significant. Amongst the Hindus, it is believed that a pilgrimage to the holy sites in India is simply incomplete without a visit to Pushkar. Taking a dip in one of the 52 ghats of the Pushkar Lake is considered to be auspicious. These ghats are amongst the most pious places in the city and visiting the most significant ones is simply worth. Pushkar is called “Tirth Raj” meaning the king of all pilgrimage sites. Strengthening the fact is the large number of Hindu temples existing in different parts of the city. There are more than 400 temples of different deity in the city, of which 80 are large and the rest are small. An interesting fact about Pushkar temples is that many of the temples were destroyed by the Muslim ruler. However, as soon as the Hindu kings acquired the power the temples were rebuilt. Gayatri Temple, Savitri Temple, Saraswati Temple, Varah Temple, and Mahadeva Temple are some of the most significant temples. Visiting these is a popular activity amongst the top tourist activities. The good thing is that there are some good hotels in Pushkar in the vicinity to the Brahma temple and other prime temples. These hotels are ideal options to pick if one seeks conveniences of connectivity. Besides, there are a number of good hotels in the city commerce centre.
The best time to go to Pushkar is during the Pushkar Mela. It is a four-day long festival full of colors of Rajasthan. Besides, the time during October to March is the peak season for tourism.
