The city is just often called as the “Lake district of Uttarakhand” for housing the beautiful Naini lake and several other small lakes in the regions around. The Naini Lake is the most significant attribute of the city and the whole city is built surrounding it. In fact, the city is named after the lake. The lake is said to possess a great religious significance on the account that it is believed that on the lake fell the charred eyes of Mata Sati who is Lord Shiva's consort. The town is said to possess one of the original 64 Shaktipeeths and is basically a town of the goddess. Taking a dip in the lake is considered as auspicious and it is believed that it washes off the sins. Towards the northern shore of the lake there is a temple of the goddess. It is called the Nanda Devi temple housing an idol of the goddess. An interesting fact about the temple is that the original temple was destroyed in the landslip of 1880, which also destroyed most of the regions of the city. The present temple was rebuilt over the ruins of the old temple.

The good thing is that the lakeside is the most commercialized area in the city and one will find everything here. Plus, the hotels near Naini Lake situated on the lakeside area are amongst the best hotels in the city.
