The town is said to possess one of the original 64 Shaktipeeths and is basically a town of the goddess. Taking a dip in the lake is considered as auspicious and it is believed that it washes off the sins. Towards the northern shore of the lake there is a temple of the goddess. It is called the Nanda Devi temple housing an idol of the goddess. An interesting fact about the temple is that the original temple was destroyed in the landslip of 1880, which also destroyed most of the regions of the city. The present temple was rebuilt over the ruins of the old temple.
