Pondicherry, officially called Puducherry, is a city and a municipality in the Union territory of Puducherry that shares its borders with the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the second largest city in the territory and until 1954 was a French outpost on Indian soil. It is one of the few places in India where one can see more of European culture and architecture than that of Indian culture and Indian architectural style. Ceded and ruled by Dutch, Portuguese, British, and French in chronological order the place has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, all contributing to formation of the city that we see today. Apart from the strong colonial influence the place is also noted for being associated with Sri Aurobindo, who chose the place as his abode in the second decade of 20th century.
