A high-point of the ride is the panoramic view from the Bernina Express, is as it passes mighty high towering glaciers of the mountains down to the swaying palms of Italy. It is the highest mountain railway in the Alps and links northern and southern Europe. It does so in the most superb way imaginable, on a railway line that is in perfect harmony with its outstanding mountain setting.

The Bernina Express goes up a 70% incline up to an altitude of 2,253m! Wow. In just 22km you'll see views of the Morteratsch Glacier on the Bernina Massis. And at this 70% incline it doesn't even use a gear rack! You'll also be able to reach the Glacier by cableway which starts at the Diavolezza stop if you want to, which runs every 20 to 30 minutes.

It's route it unbelievable, and as we've said you'll see mountains, glaciers, valleys and alpine peaks, while all the time going through huge differences in altitude. Quite a thrill ride! Besides being a bit of a thrill ride, it's one special ride too, which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The train easily navigates its way through 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and slopes of up to 70mm per metre of incline that are along the route. The highest point is at 2,253 metres above sea level. Here nature and the achievements of man have made it possible to see the Alps in the best way possible.

So you'll see stunning views, but the train itself is quite something too. It looks like it comes out of a fairy tale, from a totally different time, with its small red carriages that take you on your journey.

At the little station of Zernez, which is really close to Livigno, you can catch the red train to St Moritz for a magical day out. It runs all the way from Tirano at the Milan to St. Moritz terminus.
