There are many gorges within the national park that cut through the massive Bungle Bungle Range. These gorges are amazing to witness from the sky but even better from the ground. They are incredibly deep with massive cliff faces on either side, casting shadows through the gorge and therefore creating its own tropical climate below. Some gorges such as Deep Gorge and Cathedral Gorge are extremely high though are about 20-30 meters wide. Other places such as Echidna Chasm and Piccaninny Gorge get as close as 1 meter wide and 90 meters high. This is a breathtaking sight to be in such a narrow chasm that towers above. It is an amazing experience to escape the warm weather and be engulfed in shade and the cool breezes that flow through the gorges.
The iconic Bungle Bungle Domes are a very well-known sight due to its unique formation and amazing black and orange stripes. These stripes are extremely prominent after rainfall which makes the contrast stand out. The stripes on the bee-hive like domes are formed by different layers of sandstone that react differently to being exposed to the air. The black stipes are an algae or bacteria that is growing on the outside of that layer. The orange stripe contains less clay which means it dries out much faster. The dome formation is created by the erosion and weathering of harsh winds coming from the Tanami Desert for millions of years, wearing down the range to result in the Bungle Bungle Domes.
Surprisingly, the Bungle Bungle Range was only discovered in 1983 by a film crew who was up in the region producing a documentary on the cattle stations of the Kimberley. The Purnululu National Park was established 4 years later to preserve the natural flora and fauna and pay respect to the historical significance to the indigenous people. The popularity of the Bungles grew rapidly and boosted tourism in the area. The Bungles and their unique formation became known all around the world.
